Will Threads Put Twitter Out of Business? DSJ Breakdown

Since Elon Musk purchased the social media platform Twitter in October of 2022, the company has struggled to grow and find its identity. When Musk decided to purchase this platform, he did it as a pioneer of free speech and stopping censorship on social media. Despite this being the case, Twitter has experienced a decrease in ad revenue, service outages, and mass layoffs since Musk took the reins.

Overview

It is fair to say that Twitter has already been dealing with its fair share of problems. Now that Meta released a social media platform to directly compete with Twitter, some wonder if this will be a fatal blow to the once extremely popular social media platform. After the new app Threads was introduced by Meta, it quickly broke the record for the most rapidly downloaded app of all time.

Threads Breakdown

For those who have not downloaded Threads, it is extremely similar to Twitter’s platform, which consists of a fairly basic user experience. The content consists of a lot of self and business promotion and other basic content such as memes. Another important thing to mention about Threads is that it must be made using an Instagram account, which some people like and others don’t.

Twitter Competition

According to a social media expert from the New York Times, the sheer amount of people signing up for the platform should be very eye-opening for Twitter. However, like every social media app, it is far too early to tell what the main use for this app will become. The initial buzz around Threads right now is very noteworthy, but we still have to see if the app can pass the test of time. Something else that is worth mentioning is that Zuckerberg created Threads to replicate Twitter, and it is not much different creatively. Meta believes that people are leaving Twitter because they are fed up with how the app has been managed by Musk, so Zuckerberg and his team were very quick to act in creating an extremely similar alternative.

Wrap Up

People who work for Twitter have not been commenting on this current situation, as they either believe in the CEO’s mission or fear losing their jobs. As time goes on, we will have to wait and see if Musk and Twitter will pursue legal action against Meta, as that is something Elon Musk is considering.
