Hunter Biden Charged With Tax Related Crimes – DSJ Breakdown

Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has recently taken a plea deal for charges relating to tax and weapons crimes. The plea deal that was taken by the First son supposedly does not involve any jail time, and instead, Hunter will receive two years of probation.

Overview

Many people aren’t satisfied with the sentence that Hunter Biden received and are even calling it a slap on the wrist. Brett Tolman is a former U.S. attorney for the state of Utah and also worked for both the Obama and Bush administrations. After the sentence was imposed on the First son, Tolman tweeted, “If DOJ treated Hunter Biden like the thousands of no-names who get prosecuted he would be looking at decades in federal prison. Yes, I said decades. DOJ is violating its own internal policies in this case. The Ashcroft Memo requires they charge the ‘highest provable offense’ and seek consistent sentences with other cases brought by DOJ. This prosecution is an absolutely laughable joke. Thousands have been sent to prison for long terms for the same charges.”

Charges

In Hunter’s Plea deal, he admitted to not filing timely tax returns in the years 2017 & 2018, he also admitted to lying about drug use in order to purchase a firearm. The exact amount of taxes that Hunter failed to pay has not been specified. However, it is known that the amount was above $100,000 in each of those years, and he also reported $3 million in income in the years 2017 & 2018.

Similar Cases – Different Treatment

While it is a certainty that not every criminal charge is exactly the same, we have seen people receive charges extremely similar to those of the First Son and receive much harsher punishment. When it comes to the federal tax charges received by Hunter, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino received similar charges after he failed to pay $2.3 million in taxes. This resulted in an 8-month federal prison sentence for Sorrentino. Southern Florida Rap star Kodak Black also lied on a form about his criminal record in order to purchase a gun in Miami in 2019. The rapper was sentenced to nearly four years in prison before he was pardoned by former President Donald Trump. When compared to two years probation, these charges seem a lot more harsh when compared to Hunters.

Wrap Up

As both sides of the aisle prepare themselves for the upcoming election, it isn’t uncommon for political opponents to dig up this kind of dirt on one another. However, with a lot of evidence stacked against the first son, this seems more than just political slander. When it comes to the president’s son receiving any other charges, we can only wait and see if that will happen.
