Senator Manchin Says He Will Not Approve Biden’s Pick for IRS Commissioner

Last week, Joe Manchin who is a Democrat and West Virginia senator announced that he will not approve the president’s nomination for commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. According to Manchin, one of the biggest reasons he is voting against this nomination is because he is outraged at the way the Biden administration is implementing its funding towards the IRS under the Inflation Reduction Act

Manchin Statement

“At every turn, this administration has ignored congressional intent when implementing the Inflation Reduction Act,” Manchin said. “While Daniel Werfel is supremely qualified to serve as the IRS Commissioner, I have zero faith he will be given the autonomy to perform the job in accordance with law and for that reason, I cannot support this nomination.

Will Werfel Win?

It is known that six Republicans in the senate are voting to confirm Werfel. The Senate is supposed to vote on Biden’s nomination sometime this week. With the six republicans agreeing to move forward with the nominee, Democrats are optimistic that Werfel will win the confirmation. With that being said, only time will tell because three democrats are expected to miss the vote due to health issues.

Wrap Up

Manchin’s criticism of Daniel Werfel has been a common theme, as his opposition to him came shortly after he announced we would vote against other people nominated by Joe Biden for Government programs. For example, Manchin announced he wouldn’t approve the president’s nomination for the Federal Communications Commission. It is currently still in the air whether Werfel will be the next commissioner of the IRS.
