Tax Season to Begin on January 23rd, Says IRS

The New Year means tax season will quickly be approaching. The IRS announced on Thursday that filing season will begin on January 23rd. According to the agency, they have said that they plan to be a lot more efficient this year than in years past. It is only a matter of time to see if that promise holds up.

Expected Returns

This year’s filing deadline is April 18th, as opposed to last year’s April 15th. This is because April 15th of this year falls on a Saturday, and the following Monday, April 17th, is Emancipation Day in the District of Colombia. The IRS says they’re expected to receive 168 million 2022 returns this year, which is about 4 million more than last tax season.

However, taxpayers affected by the California storms will have until May 15 to file.

Backlog Still Looms

Despite the claims from the IRS that this tax season should run smoother than years past, a substantial amount of unprocessed returns still plague the agency. According to the IRS, there are still 10 million unprocessed returns however it is worth nothing, and that is a smaller amount than in years past. Last year the IRS was only able to take 1 in every 10 frustrated taxpayer calls due to outdated phone services and a limited number of workers. This year they said they have hired over 5,000 new phone operators as well as in-person help staff.

Make sure you can get together all of the necessary documents you need to have a quick and efficient filing season and get the most out of your return.
