Didn’t Receive the 2022 New York Stimulus Check? Here’s Why

Almost 2 million New York residents were eligible for a relief check from the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance in October, however, many residents are still waiting for their checks. The state began mailing the $270 checks on October 13th, and said that most residents should have had them by the end of October. This has left many wondering who sill haven’t received their check, is there anything they can do?

Check If You’re Eligible

Officials pointed out that some people may receive their checks after October if the Department of Taxation and Finance is still processing their return and also reiterated that October 31st was merely an estimation. The Department said taxpayers don’t need to take any action to receive these checks, however, it could be a good idea to check if you are in fact eligible to receive one.

To be eligible, you must have filed your New York State income tax return (Form IT-201) by April 18, 2022, or had a valid extension by then. New Yorkers who have recently moved should also take steps to update their information with The Department of Taxation and Finance to prevent delays in receiving any additional income tax payment checks.

However, it is important to note, you will not receive a check if:

  • The State Department of Taxation and Finance disallowed your claim for a New York State earned income credit (or noncustodial parent earned income credit), or Empire State child credit

  • If the Department adjusted your New York State earned income credit (or noncustodial parent earned income credit) or Empire State child credit to an amount less than $100.

Wrap Up

If you know for sure you are eligible, it may be a good idea to just sit tight for a little while longer and see if they check eventually does hit your mailbox.  If you need any assistance on figuring out whether you are eligible or not, speak with a trusted financial advisor as soon as you can.
