IRS to Rollout Login.gov for Authentication Tool

After agreeing to abandon the facial authentication tool Id.me, the IRS announced they are introducing a new authentication system, Login.gov.  This is the latest move following the IRS’ decision to transition away from third-party facial recognition technology.

This decision came after the IRS faced criticism from privacy advocates, stating that various types of facial recognition can pose a threat to consumers. Ron Wyden, a Senator from Oregon was outspoken about this stating, “no one should be forced to submit to facial recognition to access critical government services.”

Not Available For the Current Filing Season

The new authentication system will not be ready for this year’s filing season, but taxpayers will not have to use any biometric data to access their online accounts. Furthermore, any biometric data previously submitted to ID.me will also be deleted over the next several weeks, according to the IRS. The Treasury Department is also working with the General Services Administration to achieve the necessary security standards to schedule this rollout.

ID.me Still an Option

It should be noted that ID.me is still in play for filers that want to use the program, with new requirements in place that state any images uploaded will need to be deleted. Taxpayers will also have the option of speaking with an agent during a virtual interview to verify personal information.
